Hanoi to Ninh Binh in 2026: Train, Limousine Van, Bus, Car and Trang An Boat Prices

Hanoi to Ninh Binh by train, limousine van, bus or car: 2026 fares and times, the Trang An and Tam Coc boat tickets, what the 2025 province merger changed, and when floods close the boats.

Rowing boats carrying tourists along the Ngo Dong River at Tam Coc, Ninh Binh, between limestone karsts and rice fields

Hanoi to Ninh Binh is about 95 kilometers by road, and the trip takes an hour and a half to two and a half hours. The fastest trains need 2 hours 15 minutes from Hanoi Station, limousine vans pick you up at your Old Quarter hotel, and a day tour bundles the transport with Trang An, Hang Mua and Hoa Lu. Here’s what each option costs in 2026, which Hanoi bus station to use, what the Trang An and Tam Coc boats charge, what the 2025 merger with Ha Nam and Nam Dinh changed, and when floods shut the boats down.

Hanoi to Ninh Binh train: times and fares

Trains leave from Hanoi Station on Le Duan street and stop at Ninh Binh station on the main north-south line. When we checked Baolau on 3 October 2026, SE7, SE5, SE9, SE3, SE19 and SE1 all served the route, with departures from 6 am to 9:45 pm and journeys of 2 hours 13 to 2 hours 15. The last of them, SE1, pulls in at midnight, so it’s one to skip. Fares on the same page ran from 69,000 to 233,000 dong, depending on the train and the class. Timetables change, so check dsvn.vn for your date.

For a ride this short, a soft seat is plenty. Our Vietnam train guide explains the classes, the rule that the name on the ticket must match your passport and how to book on dsvn.vn, so we won’t repeat it here. Ninh Binh station is in the city, about 8 km and half an hour from Trang An, so you’ll need a taxi or Grab for the last stretch.

Hanoi to Ninh Binh by limousine van

A limousine van is the easiest way to do the trip without a car. The vans seat nine to eleven, collect you at a hotel in or near the Old Quarter, and drop you in Ninh Binh city, at Tam Coc or at Trang An. In October 2026 redBus listed limousine fares of 155,000 to 180,000 dong and an average journey of 1 hour 32 minutes, while Baolau showed operators charging 300,000. We’d plan on 155,000 to 300,000 dong a seat and up to two and a half hours, because every extra hotel stop adds time.

Before you pay, check where you’ll be picked up, where you’ll be dropped off, and whether the price is per seat or per van.

Hanoi to Ninh Binh bus: which station?

Public coaches to Ninh Binh leave from several Hanoi stations. Giap Bat, Nuoc Ngam, My Dinh, Yen Nghia and Gia Lam all appear on booking sites for this route, depending on the company. Giap Bat, My Dinh, Yen Nghia and Nuoc Ngam were all open for the Tet 2026 peak, when Giap Bat expected about 16,000 passengers a day and My Dinh about 17,000, according to Bao Van Hoa. We found no announced closure for 2026.

A standard coach costs about 60,000 to 170,000 dong and takes 2.5 to 3.5 hours with stops. The catch is where it ends. Many coaches on this road run on to Kim Son or Nho Quan, deeper in the province, so tell the seller you want Ninh Binh city and ask where the driver will let you off. Vietnam’s long-distance buses had a bad safety year in 2026, which we cover in our Hanoi to Sapa guide. That story is mostly about night sleepers on long routes, but we’d still pick the train or a van for this trip.

Private car, Grab and taxis

A private car with a driver costs about 1.2 to 1.5 million dong one way for a four-seater. For three or four people that can come close to four limousine seats plus a taxi at each end. Ask whether tolls and the driver’s return trip are in the price.

In Hanoi, Grab or Xanh SM is the simplest way to reach Hanoi Station or a bus station, and our Grab in Vietnam guide has the fares and the rules. We couldn’t confirm that either app offers a fixed fare for the full 95 km, so we wouldn’t count on booking the intercity leg that way.

Ninh Binh day trip from Hanoi: tour or on your own?

Organized day trips collect you from Old Quarter hotels at about 7:30 am and bring you back around 7 pm, roughly 11 hours 30 minutes in all. In October 2026 a small-group limousine tour to Hoa Lu, Trang An and Hang Mua was listed on Headout at about 45 US dollars, and a tour that adds Bai Dinh Pagoda was 56 dollars on Expedia. Both included hotel transfers, entrance and boat fees, a guide and a buffet lunch. Drinks and tips were extra, and Headout adds a 30 percent surcharge on Vietnamese public holidays.

Going alone, the Trang An, Hang Mua and Hoa Lu tickets add up to 470,000 dong, about 18 US dollars at 26,000 dong to the dollar, before transport and lunch. That’s cheaper than a tour, but the tour takes the logistics off your hands. Either way a single day is tight. About four hours go on the road, and one Trang An route takes two to four hours. We think a day covers one boat ride and one viewpoint, not more.

Trang An boat tour and Tam Coc: 2026 ticket prices

Prices in Ninh Binh moved this year. Trang An raised its adult ticket from 250,000 to 300,000 dong on 1 January 2026, and Hang Mua went from 100,000 to 150,000 dong on 1 April, according to Bao Van Hoa.

SiteAdult ticketWhat it covers
Trang An300,000 dong (children 1 to 1.3 m: 150,000)One of three boat routes, 2 to 4 hours; boats run from about 7 am to 4 pm
Tam Coc and Bich DongAbout 250,000 dong (children 120,000); about 350,000 with the electric car to Bich DongThe boat ride through the caves, around 2 hours
Hang Mua150,000 dongThe viewpoint, about 500 steps up
Hoa Lu ancient capital20,000 dongEntry to the old capital site

Each Trang An ticket covers one route, and a boat carries four passengers plus the rower. The Tam Coc figures come from Ninh Binh’s tourism portal, last updated in March 2025, and a 2026 guide matches them. Because Trang An and Hang Mua both rose this year, confirm the price at the ticket window.

Getting around Ninh Binh: Grab, bicycles and scooters

Grab has worked in Ninh Binh since June 2024. A car from the station to Trang An costs about 80,000 to 120,000 dong, according to a guide updated in August 2026, though cars can be scarce around Tam Coc and Trang An, so keep your hotel’s number handy. Bicycles rent for about 30,000 to 100,000 dong a day, and homestays often lend them free. Automatic scooters cost about 120,000 to 200,000.

Before you rent a scooter, check your permit. Vietnam recognizes International Driving Permits issued under the 1968 Vienna Convention, while US permits follow the older 1949 Geneva Convention, which Vietnam doesn’t recognize. Vietcetera reported in June 2026 that riding without a valid permit can also mean a rejected insurance claim. We’d take a bicycle or Grab.

Ninh Binh is now a bigger province

On 12 June 2025 Vietnam’s National Assembly passed Resolution 202/2025/QH15, which merged Ha Nam, Nam Dinh and Ninh Binh into one province, also called Ninh Binh. The new province covers 3,942.62 square kilometers and 4.41 million people, and the reorganized local governments started work on 1 July 2025.

For anyone going to Trang An or Tam Coc, getting there hasn’t changed: the sights, the station and the roads are where they were. The effect is on labels. The reorganization dropped the district level, so older maps, tickets and booking sites may show district and commune names that no longer exist. And “Ninh Binh” on a bus or hotel listing can now mean a town in the old Nam Dinh or Ha Nam. If you want the sights, tell the seller Ninh Binh city, Tam Coc or Trang An, and check the drop-off.

The Hang Mua viewpoint is a climb of about 500 steps, with paddies and karst peaks spread out below.

Floods, typhoons and the rice season

The rivers that make Ninh Binh’s boat rides also close them. Trang An shut its route 3 on 31 July 2026 when water rose in the caves and reopened it on the morning of 2 August; the management board says high water in the rainy season happens every year. When storm Narra approached in late August, it suspended all tourism activities until further notice. On 17 September it stopped boats again because of flooding, Tam Coc shortened its rides and halted the electric cars to Bich Dong, and the boats on Ky Lan Lake at Hoa Lu stopped too. We couldn’t confirm when Trang An reopened.

The scenery follows the calendar as well. Vietnam Airlines puts the golden paddies at May to early July and again at September to November, calls late July and August the rainy weeks, and describes December and January as cold, gloomy and foggy.

Dates to plan around

Boats stop without warning when the rivers rise, which can happen from late July through September. Check with your hotel or operator on the morning you go, and read the cancellation terms of any tour before you pay. Tet 2027 falls on 6 February, and trains and vans fill in the week on either side. Our best time to visit Vietnam guide has the full calendar, region by region.

What we would actually do

We’d take a morning train from Hanoi Station, or a limousine van if we had luggage and wanted a pick-up at the hotel, and we’d book a night in Ninh Binh so the boat isn’t a race against the last departure at around 4 pm. On the morning, we’d confirm that Trang An or Tam Coc was running, then use a bicycle or Grab to get around. We’d skip the scooter unless we held a permit Vietnam recognizes.
