Hanoi to Da Nang and Hoi An in 2026: Flight, Train or Bus

Hanoi to Da Nang and Hoi An by plane, overnight train or sleeper bus: 2026 fares and times, why Hoi An has no airport or station, the last 30 km, the way back to Hanoi and the autumn floods.

Yellow historic houses, boats and silk lanterns along the embankment of Hoi An ancient town at sunset

Hanoi to Da Nang is a flight of about 1 hour 20 minutes, a train ride of 15 to 17 hours, or an overnight bus. Hoi An, 30 km south of Da Nang, has no airport and no railway station, so every trip from Hanoi ends with a road transfer. For most people we’d fly to Da Nang and take a Grab to Hoi An: about five to six hours door to door, with fares from roughly 650,000 dong. The overnight train is the better story and the sleeper bus the cheaper one. Here’s what each option costs in 2026, how to get back from Hoi An to Hanoi, and what the autumn floods and Tet 2027 do to your plans.

Hoi An has no airport and no station, so there’s no Hanoi to Hoi An flight or train, only a flight or train to Da Nang followed by a car. Da Nang International Airport is about 30 km away. Chu Lai is 77 km away and takes domestic flights only, and the nearest station is Da Nang’s. Prices are one way, in dong, from airline sites, Baolau and redBus in October 2026. They move with the date, so read each as a range.

Hanoi to Da Nang flight: airlines, fares and baggage

Vietnam Airlines lists 20 flights a day to Da Nang and Vietjet 13, and Baolau showed 27 departures for 11 October 2026, the first at 5:40 am. Sun PhuQuoc Airways joined the route on 25 February 2026, with two flights a day at first and four planned from 1 March. Vietravel Airlines flies about two a day. Bamboo Airways still appears on some booking sites, but it stopped selling scheduled flights in August 2026.

VietjetFrom 653,061 dong on Baolau for 11 October; promotional fares from 56,000 on its own calendar7 kg hand baggage; a prepaid 20 kg bag costs 200,000 to 250,000 dong

Fares follow the calendar. Vietjet’s calendar runs from 56,000 dong on some October days to between 290,000 and 1,560,000 for January and February 2027, when Tet pushes prices up. One May 2026 guide says booking 30 to 45 days ahead gets the best price, and that fares can double at Tet and in summer.

A few rules before you go to the airport. At Noi Bai, domestic flights use Terminal 1, and our Grab in Vietnam guide has the pickup points and the fare into town. Vietjet opens domestic check-in two hours before departure and closes it 40 minutes before. Since 3 February 2026, foreign passengers on domestic flights must show an original passport, and copies aren’t accepted. Since 1 July 2026, you can carry two power banks of up to 100 Wh in your hand baggage, and you can’t use them or charge them in flight. Larger ones, up to 160 Wh, need the airline’s approval.

Da Nang is the last railway station before Hoi An, which has none, so every train trip to Hoi An ends here.

Hanoi to Da Nang train: the Reunification Express overnight

Vietnam Railways runs six trains a day between Hanoi and Da Nang: five of the SE trains that people still call the Reunification Express, and SE19, which runs only between the two cities. This is Baolau’s timetable for 11 October 2026.

SE19:45 pm1:14 pm, next day15 h 29708,000 dong

We’d take SE3, SE19 or SE1. They leave in the evening, give you a night in a bunk and arrive between 10:28 am and 1:14 pm, so we’d expect the stretch over the Hai Van Pass to come in daylight. SE7 and SE5 get in late at night, and SE9 arrives at 5:48 am, too early for a hotel check-in.

Our Vietnam train guide covers the classes and the booking, so here are only the headlines. A soft seat costs about 650,000 to 750,000 dong, a six-berth sleeper roughly 880,000 to 1.1 million and a four-berth cabin 1.2 to 1.3 million, and Baolau lists private cabins from about 2 million. Buy on dsvn.vn, in the name on your passport. Trains leave from Hanoi Station on Le Duan Street and arrive at Da Nang Station on Hai Phong Street. Hoi An has no station, so you finish with a 45 to 60 minute taxi ride that costs about 300,000 to 400,000 dong.

Hanoi to Hoi An by sleeper bus

Buses are the cheapest way and the slowest. redBus lists 82 services a day from Hanoi to Da Nang, with an average journey of 13 h 26 and fares of 410,000 to 820,000 dong. For Hoi An itself, Baolau shows double-deck sleepers from Duc Duong and HK Bus Lines: 16 to 18 hours for 700,000 to 1 million dong, collecting at offices in Hoan Kiem and Cau Giay and dropping at the companies’ offices in Hoi An.

We’d still take the plane or the train. Traffic police counted 199 deaths in long-distance bus crashes between 1 February and 5 July 2026, and on 21 July a bus fire killed seven after a tired driver swerved into a guardrail. If a bus is the only option, book a named operator online, not at a street office.

From Da Nang to Hoi An: the last 30 km

Every route above except the direct bus ends in Da Nang, so the last stretch is the same. Our Da Nang to Hoi An guide has the full comparison. These are the short answers.

Cars stop at the edge of the pedestrian old town, where foreign adults need a 120,000-dong ticket. We found no airport bus, and the LK02 doesn’t call at the airport.

Da Nang to Hanoi and Hoi An to Hanoi: the return trip

Da Nang to Hanoi is the same list in reverse. The flights run on the same airlines. Vietjet closes domestic check-in 40 minutes before departure and the road from Hoi An takes 35 to 60 minutes, so we’d leave Hoi An at least three hours ahead, and earlier in flood season. These are the trains from Da Nang on Baolau’s 11 October 2026 timetable.

Hoi An to Hanoi by bus is a single ticket. Most buses leave in the afternoon and arrive the next morning: redBus gives an average of 14 h 46 for 450,000 to 550,000 dong, and GoAsia lists departures between 12:30 and 5:45 pm. Trains don’t stop in Hoi An, so you take a taxi to Da Nang Station first.

Floods, storms and Tet 2027 on the central coast

Central Vietnam gets its rain from September to December, and October and November are the worst months; our best time to visit Vietnam guide puts Da Nang’s October average at 628 mm. On 30 October 2025 the Thu Bon River at Hoi An reached 5.62 meters, 14 centimeters above the 1964 record.

Each mode fails in its own way. Storm Bualoi stranded thousands of people at Da Nang Airport on 28 and 29 September 2025, and the aviation authority suspended aircraft acceptance there from 6 to 11 am on the 29th. A rockslide on the Hai Van Pass on 14 March 2026 stopped trains for three days, cancelled 12 passenger services and affected more than 5,600 passengers. The November 2025 floods closed the North-South line for about eight days, with damage reported in Gia Lai, Dak Lak, Khanh Hoa and Lam Dong provinces, south of Da Nang. One guide says buses get cancelled while trains keep running but can be 12 hours late. We’d book refundable fares in October and November.

Tet 2027 falls on 6 February. Vietnam Airlines Group began selling Tet flights on 25 August 2026, and the railway put about 300,000 Tet tickets on sale at 8 am on 5 September. It counts 23 January to 25 February 2027 as the peak travel period, so if your dates touch it, book now.

Dates to plan around

Floods hit Hoi An most years in October and November, and typhoon season runs through November. Tet 2027 falls on 6 February, and Hanoi to Da Nang flights and trains fill in the weeks around it. Leave a spare day before any onward flight. Our best time to visit Vietnam guide has the full calendar.

What we would actually do

We’d fly Hanoi to Da Nang on Vietnam Airlines, or on a Vietjet fare that includes a checked bag, and take a Grab from the airport to Hoi An. With a spare day and no storm forecast, we’d take SE3 or SE19 overnight instead and watch the coast arrive over breakfast. We’d skip the sleeper bus, and we’d leave Hoi An at least three hours before the flight home.

Before you fly, check whether you need a Vietnam e-visa. Going on to Japan afterwards? See shrine etiquette in Japan and eating while walking in Japan.
