Asia Travel Rules is a reference site for the boring half of a trip to Asia: the dates, the fares, the allowances, the forms. It exists because that information is scattered across railway operator PDFs, ministry press releases and forum threads from 2019 that are no longer true.
What we publish
Six subject lines, each one a category on this site:
- Line A — When to Go. Climate normals, crowd levels, price seasons, public holidays and the weeks when a country effectively shuts.
- Line B — Money & Payments. Cash requirements, ATM acceptance, IC card mechanics, tax-free thresholds, tipping norms.
- Line C — Transport & Luggage. Rail pass break-even maths, oversized-baggage rules, airport transfers, luggage forwarding.
- Line D — Staying Connected. eSIM, pocket wi-fi and local SIM options compared per gigabyte and per day.
- Line E — Local Rules. Onsen and tattoo policies, footwear, waste sorting, queueing, temple conduct.
- Line F — Entry & Documents. Arrival cards, digital entry portals, customs allowances, and what to do when a form is rejected.
What we deliberately do not publish
We do not write itineraries, “best of” lists, hotel or restaurant reviews, or travel diaries. Those require having been in a specific place on a specific day, and a site that pretends to that authority without earning it is worth nothing. We stick to the layer that can be verified from a published, checkable source: a timetable, a tariff, a statute, a climate record, an official announcement.
If a question can only be answered honestly with “it depends on where you stood and how you felt about it”, it is out of scope here. Read a first-person blog for that — several excellent ones exist.
Who writes this
Guides are researched and written by Chriss R., the site’s editor, working from primary sources: operator tariff pages, national meteorological agency records, government entry portals, customs schedules and published holiday calendars. Every guide names the sources it relies on and carries the date its figures were last checked.
We are not a travel agency, we are not affiliated with any railway operator, telecoms provider or government body, and we cannot process or advise on an individual visa application. Where an answer depends on your nationality or personal circumstances, we say so and point you at the authority that decides.
How this site makes money
Advertising, displayed through Google AdSense. Advertisers have no influence over what we publish, no sight of articles before publication, and no ability to have a figure changed. Ad units are kept out of legal pages and away from the middle of tables.
