Ha Long Bay is about 160 kilometres east of Hanoi, two and a half hours by road on the expressway, and almost everyone makes the trip by road: a cruise company’s shuttle, a public bus or a private car. There’s no passenger train, and the seaplane stopped flying in April 2026. The decisions that matter are whether to go for a day or stay overnight, which part of the bay to cruise, and how to choose a boat with safety in mind. Here’s what getting from Hanoi to Ha Long Bay costs in 2026, how the bay fees work, and what we’d book.

Getting from Hanoi to Ha Long by road
The expressway through Hai Phong brought the drive down to about two and a half hours from the Old Quarter, or three and a half when traffic is bad. If you book an overnight cruise, you’ll probably never see a bus station. The cruise company sends a shuttle, usually a nine- or eleven-seat “limousine” van, to collect you from your Old Quarter hotel between about 7:30 and 8:30 am and drop you at the port for the 12 to 12:30 check-in. It costs about 200,000 to 600,000 dong each way, and on many mid-range and luxury cruises it isn’t included, so add it before you compare prices.
Doing it yourself, coaches, sleeper buses and limousine vans run from Hanoi’s bus stations to Bai Chay for about 160,000 to 300,000 dong and take two and a half to three and a half hours. A private car with a driver costs about 1.2 to 2.4 million dong one way for four seats, which works out well for a family or a group. Our guide to Grab in Vietnam covers getting to the bus station or around Ha Long once you’re there.
Two options you’ll still see in old guides no longer exist. The railway to Ha Long has carried no passengers since 2021, and a revival is only being studied. Hai Au Aviation stopped its Ha Long seaplane flights for good on 1 April 2026. Van Don airport, about 50 km beyond Ha Long, has no flights from Hanoi.
Which port? Tuan Chau, Bai Chay or Lan Ha Bay
Most overnight cruises leave from Tuan Chau International Port, on an island joined to the mainland by a road, just west of Bai Chay. Day boats mostly sail from Ha Long International Passenger Port at Bai Chay, which has charged a port fee of 60,000 dong per person per trip since April 2024. Some cruises head east into the quieter Bai Tu Long Bay.
Lan Ha Bay, to the south, is part of the same UNESCO World Heritage site since the listing was extended to the Cat Ba archipelago in 2023. Boats there leave from the Hai Phong side, through Got pier, about two to two and a half hours from Hanoi, or from Cat Ba. Lan Ha cruises tend to be less crowded, and plenty of travellers who search for Hanoi to Halong Bay end up booking one.
Ha Long Bay sightseeing fees in 2026
The bay is split into numbered routes, and each has its own sightseeing fee, paid per person. Cruise prices normally include it, so this only matters if you hire a boat yourself at the port. Routes 6, 7 and 8 were added in May 2025; the others haven’t changed since 2017.
| Route | Fee per person |
|---|---|
| Routes 3 and 4 | 200,000 dong |
| Routes 1, 2 and 5 | About 250,000 dong |
| Route 6 | 150,000 dong |
| Route 7 (routes 1 to 4 combined) | 600,000 dong |
| Route 8 | 70,000 dong |
Prices quoted at the ticket desk in Bai Chay usually include the 60,000-dong port fee, which is why they look higher than these figures.
Ha Long Bay cruise: day trip or overnight?
A Halong Bay day trip from Hanoi means five hours or more on the road for about four hours on the water. Day cruises cost roughly $29 to $130 a person with lunch, a cave and kayaking, and the shuttle is often extra. It works if a day is all you have, but it’s a long one.
An overnight Ha Long Bay cruise, two days and one night, costs roughly $110 to $150 a person on a three-star boat, $160 to $190 on a four-star and $250 to $320 on a five-star, sharing a cabin. Three days and two nights runs from about $206 to $550. Meals, a cave visit, kayaking or a cooking class and the bay fees are usually included; drinks, the shuttle and tips usually aren’t. Most boats carry a tip box at the end, and our guide to tipping in Vietnam has what to put in it. We think the overnight is worth the extra: the bay at 6 am, before the day boats arrive, is the reason to go.
Boat safety after the 2025 capsize
On 19 July 2025, the tourist boat Vinh Xanh 58 capsized in a sudden thunderstorm on route 2 with 49 people aboard, and 39 died. Investigators found the hull was taller than the standard design and the boat had no automatic alarm. Since then, Quang Ninh province has required tourist boats to carry AIS, VHF radio and GPS, put patrols on the bay around the clock, replaced old life jackets and checked passenger lists before every departure. After a fire on a cruise boat with 41 people aboard in February 2026, in which nobody was hurt, the government ordered inspections of every tourist vessel on the bay.
The port authority stops departures when a storm approaches, as it did for Typhoon Wipha in July 2025 and storm Narra on 22 August 2026. There is no official refund rule. Most operators refund or rebook when the authorities cancel sailings, but read the terms before you pay. On board, note where the life jackets are, and wear one in a kayak or a small tender.
Typhoon season and winter fog
July to September brings the highest risk of storms and cancelled sailings. From December to February it’s cool, around 13 to 22°C, and often misty, so the karsts can fade into grey. October to November and March to April are the best months. Our best time to visit Vietnam guide covers the north month by month.
What we would actually do
We’d book a two-day, one-night cruise on a four-star boat, either from Tuan Chau or in Lan Ha Bay, with the company’s own shuttle, and we’d ask the operator what safety equipment the boat carries before paying. With only one day in Hanoi, we’d skip Ha Long and go to Trang An in Ninh Binh instead: about two hours away, with karsts you see from a rowing boat.
