Bangkok to Krabi in 2026: Flights, Night Bus, Train via Surat Thani and Airport Transfers

Bangkok to Krabi by flight, night bus or train via Surat Thani: 2026 fares and times, Don Mueang or Suvarnabhumi, the trip back, and Krabi Airport to Ao Nang, Railay and Koh Lanta.

Bangkok to Krabi is a flight of about an hour and 25 minutes, and roughly 20 flights a day make it. There’s no Bangkok to Krabi train, because Krabi has no railway station, so the alternatives are an overnight bus of 11 hours or more, or a night train to Surat Thani and a minivan. Here’s what each costs in 2026, which airport to fly from now that Thai AirAsia is back at Suvarnabhumi, how to get from Krabi Airport to Ao Nang, Krabi Town, Railay and Koh Lanta, and what the monsoon does to the boats.

Bangkok to Krabi flight: Don Mueang or Suvarnabhumi?

About 20 flights a day connect Bangkok and Krabi (KBV), split between the two Bangkok airports, and the Bangkok to Krabi flight takes about 1 hour 25 minutes from either.

AirportAirlines flying to KrabiHow often
Don Mueang (DMK)Thai AirAsia, Thai Lion Air, Nok AirThai AirAsia up to 6 a day from 1 October; about 13 a day in all
Suvarnabhumi (BKK)Thai Airways, Thai Vietjet, Thai AirAsia, Bangkok AirwaysThai Airways goes from 2 to 3 a day on 25 October; Thai AirAsia 2 a day

Thai AirAsia complicated the choice this year. It pulled all nine of its Suvarnabhumi routes for about ten weeks from mid-July 2026, citing high jet fuel prices and softer demand, and flew its domestic services from Don Mueang only. On 1 October it returned to Suvarnabhumi on three routes, with two Krabi flights a day.

So which airport? The one nearer your hotel, or Suvarnabhumi if you’re connecting from abroad. AOT runs a shuttle bus between the two every 30 minutes from 5 am to midnight, and our Suvarnabhumi Airport to Bangkok guide covers both.

What a Bangkok to Krabi flight costs, and what the bag adds

A Thai travel site’s October 2026 survey found one-way fares of 900 to 2,000 baht booked about six weeks ahead, and Bangkok Airways advertises Krabi from 1,200 baht. Fares are rising: in late September, AirAsia and Vietjet were raising prices on new bookings by 20 to 25%, with jet fuel at US$194.90 a barrel.

Bags are where low-cost fares catch people out. Thai AirAsia’s cheapest fare allows 7 kg in the cabin and no checked bag, and a 20 kg bag added at the airport costs roughly 400 to 1,000 baht, so add it when you book. Thai Vietjet’s Eco fare works the same way, and its Deluxe fare includes 20 kg. Thai Airways includes 20 kg on domestic economy tickets, and Bangkok Airways states a 20 kg allowance, which narrows the price gap more than the headline fares suggest.

Bangkok to Krabi bus: the night coach from Sai Tai Mai

The Bangkok to Krabi bus leaves from the Southern Bus Terminal (Sai Tai Mai), on the Thonburi side of the river, mostly in the evening. A booking site lists departures from about 5:30 to 8:40 pm, and one operator’s 18:40 coach reached Krabi at 05:40 for 715 baht. Expect 11 to 14 hours: a standard first-class seat costs about 650 to 715 baht and a VIP seat about 900 to 1,100.

The coach doesn’t go to Ao Nang. It stops at the Krabi bus terminal in Talat Kao, 4 to 5 km north of Krabi Town, where songthaews to the beaches cost 50 to 60 baht by day and 60 to 100 after 6 pm. The Transport Company takes bookings online and on its 1490 call centre up to 60 days ahead, or 90 before major holidays, and booking sites such as 12Go list the private operators.

A night in a reclining seat costs you the first morning, so we’d take the bus only when flights are dear or sold out.

Bangkok to Krabi train: overnight to Surat Thani, then a bus

There is no Bangkok to Krabi train. The nearest station is Surat Thani, which is actually at Phun Phin, about 15 km outside the town. Long-distance trains leave from Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal, not Hua Lamphong, and about nine a day reach Surat Thani in 9 to 11 hours. These are the evening ones:

TrainLeaves Krung Thep AphiwatReaches Phun PhinWhat to know
Special Express 3116:5002:20Newer sleeper cars, arrives in the small hours
Express 8519:5006:23Sleeper berths, arrives around dawn
Train 17320:1006:46Arrives around dawn
Special Express 3922:5007:50Second-class seats only, no berths

From Phun Phin, a bus or minivan takes about three hours to Krabi for roughly 250 to 400 baht, and Visit Thailand Today puts the whole trip at 14 to 15 hours and 930 to 1,260 baht. Book on the State Railway’s D-Ticket site, where tickets go on sale up to 180 days ahead, and pick Krung Thep Aphiwat as the departure station. We’d choose this route only for the bed: it saves a hotel night, not time.

Krabi to Bangkok: flying, riding or taking the train back

Krabi to Bangkok is the same trip in reverse, on the same airlines, so check whether your ticket lands at Don Mueang or Suvarnabhumi. A booking site lists coaches leaving the Krabi bus terminal at about 4:10 and 5 pm and reaching Bangkok in the small hours, at the Southern Bus Terminal or Mo Chit. By train, you take the bus to Surat Thani first, then a northbound sleeper from Phun Phin; check D-Ticket for times before you buy the bus.

Krabi Airport is 30 to 45 minutes from Ao Nang by car, and Railay adds a boat and a wade. We’d sleep in Ao Nang or Krabi Town the night before a flight, and keep a spare day before any international departure from Bangkok.

Krabi Airport to Ao Nang, Krabi Town, Railay and Koh Lanta

Krabi Airport is one terminal complex with domestic and international sides, 7 km east of Krabi Town and 26 km from Ao Nang.

The 150-baht shuttle, run by Phichet Transport, leaves roughly hourly from about 6 am to 8 pm, stops in Krabi Town and then along Ao Nang’s main strip, and takes 45 to 90 minutes. On the Koh Lanta run, the car ferry queue in December and January can stretch for kilometers, with waits of hours reported.

Longtails wait for passengers along Krabi’s Andaman coast. When the sea is rough off Ao Nang, the calmer Ao Nam Mao pier is the fallback for Railay.

Ao Nang to Railay: the longtail boats

Railay is a peninsula cut off by limestone cliffs, so there’s no road and everyone arrives by boat. From Ao Nang beach, longtails leave when full from 8 am to 6 pm for 100 baht a person, and the crossing takes about 15 minutes. After dark in high season the fare rises to 150 baht, or 800 for a whole boat. You wade ashore, so wear sandals you can take off and bring a waterproof phone case.

West Railay is the beach for swimming. East Railay, where boats from Ao Nam Mao and Krabi Town land, is mostly mangrove and not suitable for swimming.

Krabi’s monsoon season and the boats

The Andaman coast gets its rain from May to October. By the Thai Meteorological Department’s 1981 to 2010 normals, Krabi’s wettest month is October at 323.5 mm, then September at 275 mm and August at 266 mm.

Waves are what stop the boats. In September 2024, the national park covering Phi Phi and Ao Nang closed its marine attractions for four days, with Phi Phi ferries suspended and waves of 2 to 4 meters. On 29 June 2026 the Meteorological Department forecast waves of about 2 meters in the lower Andaman Sea, higher in thunderstorms, and told small boats in the upper Andaman to stay ashore until 3 July. For Railay, that means the Ao Nang boats stop in rough seas, and the calmer Ao Nam Mao pier becomes the fallback.

Koh Lanta’s boats are hit harder. An independent Lanta guide says ferry and speedboat services are greatly reduced from May to October, while minivans and car ferries run from 6 am to 10 pm all year. We couldn’t confirm a 2026 speedboat timetable, so plan on the minivan.

Weather and dates to plan around

The rainy season runs from May to October, and Krabi’s rain peaks from August to October. When the boats stop, so does the Railay run, so don’t schedule it for the day of an international flight, and keep a spare night. Prices usually climb over Christmas, New Year and Chinese New Year (6 February 2027). Our best time to visit Thailand guide covers the coasts month by month.

What we would actually do

We’d fly, from Don Mueang if a Thai AirAsia or Thai Lion Air fare was cheapest and from Suvarnabhumi if we’d just landed from abroad, adding the checked bag at booking. At Krabi Airport we’d take the 150-baht shuttle to Ao Nang with a backpack and no deadline, and a fixed-fare taxi otherwise. For Railay in the rainy season we’d use the Ao Nam Mao pier and keep a spare night before any flight home.
