Seoul to Gyeongju is a two-hour train ride, and since September 2026 a standard KTX seat costs 44,500 won one way. The train stops at Gyeongju Station, which was called Singyeongju until December 2023 and sits well outside town. The express bus takes about an hour and a half longer to save you roughly 11,000 won on a deluxe seat, and flying isn’t worth it. Here’s what each option costs in 2026, whether a Gyeongju day trip from Seoul is realistic, how to come from Busan instead, and how to get from the station or bus terminal to Hwangnidan-gil, Bulguksa and Daereungwon.

How to get from Seoul to Gyeongju: the options compared
| Option | Journey time | One-way cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| KTX from Seoul Station | About 2 h | 44,500 won in standard | Almost everyone |
| KTX-Eum from Cheongnyangni | About 3 h 20 | Around 44,600 won | When the fast trains are full |
| Express bus from Seoul Express Bus Terminal | About 3 h 35 to 3 h 45 | 33,600 won deluxe, 41,400 and up premium, before the October rise | Sold-out train days |
| Premium bus from Dong Seoul | About 3 h 30 | 36,400 won before the October rise | Hotels in east Seoul |
| Flight to Gimhae, then bus or train | About 3 h from Gimpo to the Gyeongju bus terminal | From about 50,000 won, plus the ride on | Starting from Gimpo or using miles |
For most people the choice is simple. Take the KTX, book it as soon as sales open, and keep the bus as the backup. The sections below cover each option, then the part most guides skip: getting from the station into town.
Seoul to Gyeongju KTX: the fast train
The Seoul to Gyeongju train is almost always a KTX, and it leaves from Seoul Station, on subway Lines 1 and 4 and the AREX airport line. The fastest take about two hours. In October 2026 the timetable showed 27 or 28 trains a day from Seoul Station, the first at 5:13 am and the last at 8:58 pm, and 20 or 21 a day coming back, the last at 10:38 pm. Trains from Suseo, the former SRT station, stop here too. Our Seoul to Busan guide explains how the KTX and SRT merger works and which Seoul station to pick.
The standard fare fell from about 49,300 won to 44,500 when Korail took over SR and KTX fares dropped by roughly 10 percent on 1 September 2026. The same day, three more trains a day on weekdays and five on weekends began to call at Gyeongju. If the fast KTX is full, the KTX-Eum on the Jungang line leaves from Cheongnyangni and takes about 3 h 20, for around 44,600 won.
Gyeongju Station, the old Singyeongju
The KTX station opened in November 2010 as Singyeongju, “new Gyeongju”. The city’s old station, open since 1918, closed in December 2021, and Korail renamed Singyeongju as Gyeongju Station on 28 December 2023. Older blogs and maps still say Singyeongju; it’s the same place. On Korail+ and letskorail.com, search for Gyeongju.
The station is in Geoncheon-eup, west of the city center, so the train doesn’t drop you at the sights. Allow 20 to 30 minutes by city bus, or 15 to 20 by taxi, which costs roughly 13,000 to 16,000 won.
Booking KTX tickets to Gyeongju as a foreigner
Since 1 October 2026, KTX tickets go on sale 60 days before departure, up from 30. Book on letskorail.com or in the Korail+ app with your passport details. As in our Seoul to Busan guide, if the app rejects your foreign card, the website on a laptop usually goes through. A return costs about 89,000 won, so the KORAIL Pass only pays off if you add more long legs, such as Busan.
What changed for Gyeongju trips in 2026
| Date | What changed | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| 28 Dec 2023 | Singyeongju renamed Gyeongju Station | Search for Gyeongju when booking |
| 1 Sep 2026 | KTX and SRT merged; Seoul to Gyeongju cut from about 49,300 to 44,500 won; more trains | Cheaper, with more seats at weekends |
| 1 Oct 2026 | KTX sales open 60 days ahead; express and intercity bus fares up 9 percent | Book earlier; the bus saves even less |
| 25 Oct 2026 | Jin Air’s Gimpo to Pohang flight due to end | No flight close to Gyeongju from Seoul |
| Second half of 2026 | Repairs planned on Bulguksa’s main hall; dates not fixed | Check for visitor limits before you go |
Seoul to Gyeongju by express bus
Express buses leave Seoul Express Bus Terminal, on subway Lines 3, 7 and 9, eleven times a day between 6:50 am and 10 pm, and take about 3 h 35 to 3 h 45. Before the October 2026 rise, a deluxe seat cost 33,600 won and a premium seat 41,400 and up; one regular bus a day charged 22,700. Dong Seoul Terminal on Line 2 has six premium buses a day, the last at 6:10 pm, for 36,400 won in about 3 h 30. Add roughly 9 percent to all of these.
A deluxe seat is about 11,000 won cheaper than the train and costs you an extra hour and a half, so we’d take the bus only when the KTX is sold out. The upside is the arrival: the express and intercity terminals sit next to each other in town, about 20 minutes by city bus from the KTX station. Book on kobus.co.kr, which has an English page and, as we found for Busan, takes foreign cards more reliably than the bus apps.
Flying to Gyeongju
Gyeongju has no airport. The nearest, Pohang Gyeongju Airport, had a Jin Air flight from Gimpo, but Kyongbuk Maeil reported in September 2026 that it would stop on 25 October: only 44,281 passengers used it in 2025, on planes that were 32.9 percent full. Jin Air still flies Pohang to Jeju twice a day, which helps if you’re already on the island. Flying Gimpo to Gimhae and going on to Gyeongju takes about three hours in total by Rome2Rio’s estimate, no faster than the KTX once you’ve reached Gimpo. From Incheon Airport, take the AREX to Seoul Station and the train from there.
Is a Gyeongju day trip from Seoul realistic?
Yes, and the KTX makes it easier than it used to be. But it isn’t relaxed: about four hours go on the train, the station is outside town, and Bulguksa is a separate trip across the city. We’d only do it if you can’t spare a night, and we’d start at Bulguksa when it opens, then go into town for the tombs, which stay open until 10 pm.
| Time | Step |
|---|---|
| 5:13 am | First KTX leaves Seoul Station |
| About 7:15 am | Arrive at Gyeongju Station; have breakfast in town or head straight for Bulguksa by taxi or bus |
| 9:00 am | Bulguksa opens; admission is free |
| Afternoon | Bus 10 or 11 back to the terminals, then Hwangnidan-gil and Daereungwon |
| Until 10 pm | Daereungwon and Cheomseongdae stay open |
| 10:38 pm | Last KTX back to Seoul, arriving after midnight |
Busan to Gyeongju by KTX or bus
Busan to Gyeongju is much simpler. The KTX from Busan Station, on subway Line 1, takes about 30 minutes, with 26 to 28 trains a day from 5:19 am to 10:16 pm in October 2026. Fares vary by train and source, roughly 10,000 to 11,000 won, so check Korail+. The intercity bus from Busan’s Nopo terminal, at the end of Line 1, takes about 50 minutes and runs about 50 times a day, from 6:20 am to 10 pm. It cost 7,700 won before the October rise.
| Option | Journey time | One-way cost | Arrives at |
|---|---|---|---|
| KTX from Busan Station | About 30 min | Roughly 10,000 to 11,000 won | Gyeongju Station, outside town |
| Intercity bus from Nopo | About 50 min | 7,700 won before the October rise | Gyeongju bus terminals, in town |
The KTX wins if your hotel is near Busan Station. Otherwise we’d take the bus, which ends in the middle of Gyeongju and saves the 20-minute ride in from the station.
From the station or bus terminal to Hwangnidan-gil, Bulguksa and Daereungwon
The KTX station is the awkward end. City buses 60, 61, 70 and 700 run from there into town, a ride costs about 1,500 won, and your T-money card works on them. Bus numbers change, so check them in Naver Map and keep your Korea eSIM switched on. Hwangnidan-gil, the street of cafes and hanbok rental shops, Daereungwon and Cheomseongdae are close enough to walk between: Koreatodo puts every central sight within 30 minutes on foot of the others.
| Where | From Gyeongju Station | From the bus terminals | Hours and entry |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hwangnidan-gil | Bus 60, 61, 70 or 700, about 30 min; taxi about 15 min | City bus or a short taxi ride | Shops keep their own hours |
| Daereungwon and Cheomseongdae | Bus 60 or 61, about 30 min; taxi 15 to 20 min | City bus or a short taxi ride | 9:00 to 22:00; Cheomseongdae free, Cheonmachong tomb 3,000 won for adults |
| Bulguksa | Bus 700 or 711, 47 to 55 min; taxi about 30 min | Bus 10 or 11, 34 to 42 min | 9:00 to 18:00; free |
Dates to plan around
Gyeongju is crowded on holidays: over four days of Lunar New Year 2024 it had about 388,000 visitors, 237,000 of them on Hwangnidan-gil. Seollal 2027 falls on 7 February, with the holiday running from 6 to 9 February, so book trains early. Bulguksa’s main hall, Daeungjeon, is due for repairs in the second half of 2026; in February 2026 officials hadn’t decided whether to restrict visitors. Our best time to visit South Korea guide has the full calendar.
What we would actually do
We’d book a KTX seat from Seoul Station on Korail+ as soon as the 60-day window opened, and stay one night so we could walk through the tombs and Cheomseongdae in the evening. We’d take a taxi from the station to the hotel and the bus to Bulguksa the next morning. Coming from Busan, we’d take the bus, because it ends in town.
