What we collect, and why
1. Server logs — collected automatically
Our host records the usual technical data for every request: IP address, date and time, page requested, referring page, browser and operating system. This is used to operate the site, diagnose faults and detect abuse. Legal basis: legitimate interest in running a secure, working website. Retention: logs are kept for a maximum of 12 months.
2. Cookies and similar technologies
Strictly necessary cookies (including the one recording your consent choice) are set without consent because the site cannot function without them. Analytics and advertising cookies are set only after you consent through the banner. Full detail, including the individual cookies and their lifetimes, is in our cookie policy. Legal basis: consent, except for strictly necessary cookies (legitimate interest).
3. Email you send us
If you write to us, we keep your message and address for as long as needed to deal with it, and up to 24 months afterwards so we can follow up on a correction. We do not add you to a mailing list because you contacted us. Legal basis: legitimate interest in answering correspondence, or consent where you asked to be kept informed.
4. What we do not collect
We do not run user accounts, we do not accept comments, we do not sell anything, and we never ask for payment details, passport data or travel documents. If a page ever asks you for any of those, it is not us.
Advertising
This site is funded by advertising served by Google AdSense. Where you have consented, Google and its partners may set cookies or read device identifiers to measure and personalise advertising. Where you refuse, ads are still shown but are non-personalised, based only on general context and coarse location.

Analytics
Where you consent, we use Google Analytics 4 to understand which guides are read and where readers arrive from. IP addresses are truncated by Google before storage, and we have Google Signals and advertising features configured according to your consent choice. We never use analytics data to identify an individual reader.
Who your data is shared with
- o2switch (France) — hosting provider, processes server logs on our behalf.
- Google Ireland Ltd / Google LLC — advertising, analytics and Search Console, subject to your consent.
- Google Fonts — the site loads two typefaces from Google’s font service, which receives your IP address as a technical necessity of delivering the file.
We do not sell personal data, and we do not share it with data brokers.
International transfers
We are established in the United States, and Google may process data in the United States. Where data is transferred out of the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, the transfer relies on the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses and, for participating US recipients, the EU-US Data Privacy Framework and its UK extension.
Your rights
If you are in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, you have the right to access your data, correct it, have it erased, restrict or object to its processing, receive it in a portable format, and withdraw consent at any time without affecting processing already carried out.
If you are a California resident, you have the right to know what categories of personal information are collected and disclosed, to request deletion, to correct inaccurate information, and to opt out of any “sale” or “sharing” for cross-context behavioural advertising.
