Seoul to Jeonju in 2026: KTX, Bus and the Hanok Village

Seoul to Jeonju by KTX or express bus: 2026 fares after the KTX and SRT merger, getting to the Hanok Village, Gyeonggijeon, Jeonju bibimbap, and whether to stay a night in a hanok.

Curved tiled roofs of traditional hanok houses covered in snow in Jeonju Hanok Village

Seoul to Jeonju is a KTX ride of about an hour and forty minutes from Yongsan Station, or an express bus of around two hours forty from the Express Bus Terminal. Jeonju is a city of about 640,000 people in the southwest, and most visitors come for the Jeonju Hanok Village, a district of roughly 735 traditional hanok houses that never closes and costs nothing to walk into. Below we cover what each way of getting there costs in 2026, after the KTX and SRT merger, how to get from the station or bus terminal to the village, what to see at Gyeonggijeon and Omokdae, where to eat Jeonju bibimbap, and whether to come for the day or sleep in a hanok.

Arriving at Incheon Airport with a suitcase? The city site lists a limousine bus that runs straight to Jeonju in about 3 h 50, and one from Gimpo in about 3 h 20. Our Incheon Airport to Seoul guide covers the other route, the AREX train into Seoul, where you would change for Yongsan. Allow a night in Seoul if your flight lands late, because the last KTX leaves Yongsan in the evening.

For most people the answer is the KTX. Book it as soon as sales open and keep the bus as the backup. Creatrip notes there are no direct flights to Jeonju, so ignore the airlines.

Seoul to Jeonju by KTX

The KTX to Jeonju leaves from Yongsan Station, on subway Line 1. Creatrip puts the trip at about 1 h 40, RailMonsters gives 1 h 44 for the fastest train, and iVisitKorea says 1 h 50, so plan on somewhere between the two. Trip.com lists a first train from Yongsan at 5:08 am and a last at 9:48 pm. Counts vary by day and by source, and we could not find a reliable figure for the last train home, so check Korail+ before you plan an evening in town.

Creatrip lists 34,400 won one way in standard. When Korail took over SR on 1 September 2026, KTX fares dropped to SRT levels, about 10 percent lower on average, but Toss Bank points out the cut is not the same on every route. We found no published Jeonju figure. If it follows the average the fare is near 31,000 won; that is our arithmetic, not an official number. Trips on the Jeolla line, which Jeonju is on, rose from 40 to 45 a day on weekdays and from 45 to 54 at weekends on the same date.

Korail+ now sells KTX and SRT tickets together, and under the cross-running plan KTX trains also start from Suseo. We found no sign of a regular Suseo to Jeonju service, so assume Yongsan unless the app shows otherwise. Our Seoul to Busan guide explains how the merger works. Tickets go on sale 60 days ahead since 1 October 2026, on letskorail.com or in the Korail+ app. Weekend seats to Jeonju sell out fast, so book Friday and Saturday trains early.

Seoul to Jeonju by express bus

Express buses leave from Seoul Central City Terminal, at Express Bus Terminal station on subway Lines 3, 7 and 9. Creatrip gives about 2 h 40 and Rome2Rio an average of 2 h 56; traffic decides. On the pre-October fares, general seats cost 14,300 won, deluxe 20,900 and premium 27,100. Express and intercity bus fares rose 9 percent on 1 October 2026, which by our arithmetic makes them about 15,600, 22,800 and 29,500 won.

A deluxe seat saves perhaps 8,000 or 9,000 won against the train and costs about an hour. We would take the bus only when the KTX is full. The one real advantage is the end of the trip: the Jeonju Express Bus Terminal is closer to the village than the station. Book on kobus.co.kr, which, as we found for Seoul to Gyeongju, takes foreign cards more reliably than the bus apps.

Those bus numbers come from the city’s own Hanok Village site. Routes change, so check them in Naver Map with your Korea eSIM switched on. Our T-money card guide says the card works on city buses in most Korean cities, but we did not find a Jeonju-specific source, so carry a little cash too. The station building is itself built in a hanok style, which makes it the better photo stop of the two.

What to see in Jeonju Hanok Village

The village covers about 298,000 square meters in Pungnam-dong and Gyo-dong. The city counts 947 buildings, 735 of them traditional hanoks, plus 575 businesses: 203 places to stay and 183 food and drink venues. The area was designated for hanok preservation in 1977 and passed 10 million visitors a year in 2016. The lanes are open 24 hours, though each shop and museum keeps its own hours.

Gyeonggijeon is the one paid sight worth the money. It enshrines a portrait of Yi Seonggye, the founder of the Joseon dynasty, and entry is free on Culture Day, the last Wednesday of each month, and on New Year’s Day, Seollal, Chuseok, 3 March and 15 August. The city site and Trazy disagree on opening hours, so go in the morning. It is a royal shrine of a different tradition from the Shinto shrines in our shrine etiquette in Japan guide, but the same habits help: lower your voice, and keep the camera down where signs say so.

Omokdae, a pavilion on the hillside, was built to commemorate a victory over Japanese forces in 1380. Hanbok rental shops line the lanes, with rentals listed from about 6 US dollars on Klook. The Jaman Mural Village is next door if you have energy left.

Bowl of bibimbap with rice, fried egg and assorted vegetables
Bibimbap is the dish Jeonju is known for. In the village area a regular bowl cost 10,000 to 12,000 won in 2023.

Jeonju bibimbap and what else to eat

Jeonju has been a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy since 2012, and bibimbap is the reason most people name. A 2023 report in the local press put Jeonju’s average bowl at 10,650 won, the highest of any region. In the village area a regular bowl was 10,000 to 12,000 won and a raw-beef one 12,000 to 15,000. We found no 2026 menu prices, so expect to pay more. Jongno Hoegwan and Kajok Hoegwan are the two restaurants most guides name.

Beyond bibimbap there is kalguksu, handmade noodles in broth, and hanjeongsik, a table of 20 or more dishes. In the lanes, people eat choco pie and bibimbap bread as they stroll. If Japan is next on your route, our eating while walking in Japan guide explains why the same habit gets looks there. Our Korean etiquette guide covers table manners, which matter more at a hanjeongsik meal.

We would stay one night. The KTX makes a day trip realistic, but it leaves little time for a slow lunch and a sunset at Omokdae. Hanok stays have heated ondol floors and small courtyards, and HotelsCombined listed 437 places near the village on 4 October 2026, so book early for weekends. Shoes come off at the door, as in most Korean homes.

Dates to plan around

Seollal 2027 falls on 7 February, with the holiday running from 6 to 9 February, and trains and hanok rooms fill early. Gyeonggijeon is free on Seollal and Chuseok, which also means crowds. Our best time to visit South Korea guide has the full calendar.

What we would actually do

We would book a KTX seat from Yongsan on Korail+ as soon as the 60-day window opened, arrive by late morning and take bus 79 to the village. We would see Gyeonggijeon first, eat bibimbap at lunch, and stay one night in a hanok so we could climb Omokdae at sunset. The next morning we would walk the lanes before the shops opened.

Paying for it all? Cards work almost everywhere, but read up on money in Korea before you go.

Want another hanok-and-history trip? Seoul to Gyeongju covers the KTX to Silla’s old capital and why its station sits outside town.
